CS2 Skin Rarity Chart: Why Covert Skins Can Cost Less

"Why is my Covert skin cheaper than your Classified one?"


A guy in my Discord asked me that last week after opening a case and getting all excited over a Covert, only to see it listed for less than his mate's Classified skin from a totally different case. He was staring at a cs2 skin rarity chart he found somewhere and it still didn't make sense to him. Fair question. I got burned by the exact same confusion back in 2018 when I thought rarity tier alone decided price, and I overpaid for a Factory New AK-47 Elite Build thinking it was some hidden gem because it was "Classified." It wasn't. It's a common Classified that gets restocked constantly through case openings.

So let's actually sort this out properly, because the rarity system in CS2 is simple in structure but genuinely confusing in practice.

The actual tier order, bottom to top]

CS2 (and CSGO before it) uses a color coded rarity system for weapon skins. From least to most rare:

* Consumer Grade (white/grey text)


* Industrial Grade (light blue)


* Mil-Spec (blue)


* Restricted (purple)


* Classified (pink)


* Covert (red)


* Contraband (gold/orange, basically extinct now, only the M4A4 Howl holds this tier)

Knives and gloves sit outside this ladder entirely. They're pulled from a separate "special items" pool inside cases, and that's why a Case Hardened Karambit can be worth more than every red and pink skin combined from the same case. Rarity tier tells you nothing about knife value because knives aren't ranked on the same scale as weapon skins.

Where people mess up]

The mistake almost everyone makes early on is assuming rarity equals price. It doesn't. Rarity determines how likely you are to pull the item from a case, not what it's worth on the market. A Mil-Spec skin like the AK-47 Redline is blue tier, technically low rarity, but it regularly sells for 8 to 15 dollars depending on wear and whether it has the StatTrak variant. Compare that to some Covert skins sitting at 3 dollars because nobody wants the pattern or the finish looks muddy in-game.

Drop rates are roughly fixed by Valve. Historically it's been something like 79.92% for Mil-Spec, 15.98% for Restricted, 3.2% for Classified, 0.64% for Covert, and 0.26% for the rare special item slot (knives/gloves). These numbers get referenced a lot but Valve doesn't publish exact figures publicly, so treat them as community-derived estimates, not gospel.

Float values matter more than people expect]

Rarity chart aside, wear condition and float value swing price way more than tier does in a lot of cases. Take the AWP Dragon Lore. Factory New with a low float (say 0.01 to 0.07) can go for 8000 dollars plus, while a Battle-Scarred copy of the exact same skin might sit around 1500. Same Covert rarity, same skin, wildly different price because of float.

I learned this the hard way trading a Field-Tested Vulcan for what I thought was a fair swap with a Minimal Wear one. Visually they looked almost identical in the preview pane. Price gap ended up being nearly 40 dollars. Always check the float, never trust the thumbnail.

StatTrak and souvenir tags]

These aren't rarity tiers, they're separate modifiers, but they stack on top of the rarity system and confuse newcomers constantly. StatTrak versions apply to most tiers except the very cheapest, and souvenir skins only drop from Major tournament drops, never from cases. A souvenir AWP Asiimov from a Major can be worth double the standard version purely because supply is capped to that event's drop pool.

Where to actually check this stuff]

I still check it whenever a new case drops because Valve occasionally tweaks the special item odds and it's easy to miss.

Always verify through Steam's own inspect link before trusting any external valuation. Does higher rarity always mean higher price?


No. Blue and purple tier skins with good patterns or popular finishes (Redline, Asiimov, Neo-Noir) frequently outprice cheap Covert skins.

Not really. They're pulled from a separate pool and don't follow the Consumer to Covert progression at all.

Why did the Howl become Contraband?


Valve reclassified it after a copyright dispute with the original skin's creator, it's the only weapon skin in that tier and can never be reproduced.

Do StatTrak versions change rarity tier?


No, StatTrak is a counter modifier, not a rarity change. It applies within the same tier the base skin already has.

Is float or rarity more important for resale value?


Depends on the skin, but for expensive Covert items float usually matters more once you're past the tier itself. For cheaper skins, rarity and demand for the specific pattern matter more.
